What To Do In Schriever Air Force Base, CO
May1983 marked the groundbreaking for what would become Schriever Air Force Base (Schriever AFB)—the newest of the US Air Force bases.SchrieverAFB is located approximately 10 miles east of Peterson AFB near Colorado Springs in El Paso County, Colorado. Thebase is manned by more than 1800 activeduty and guard/reserve personnel, contractors and civilian employees.
Originally called Consolidated Space Operations Center (CSOC) the base was renamed Falcon Air Force Station once it became operational. In September of 1985, the 2nd Space Wing relocated from Peterson AFB to Falcon Air Station. The 12 new buildings were occupied by 230 Air Force members, contractors and civilian employees. A phased turn over began in October of 1987 and this wing took over operational control of the Air Force Satellite Control Network. The turn over lasted several years.
Falcon Air Force Station was re-designated as Falcon Air Force Base in June of 1988. The 2nd Space Wing and the 50th Tactical Fighter Wing were re-designated as the 50th Space Wing activated at Falcon AFB. Falcon AFB was renamed Schriever AFB on June 5, 1988 in honor of Bernard Adolph Schriever. Schriever was a pioneer in the development of the US ballistic missile programs. This is the only AFB named for a living Air Force Veteran. General Schriever passed away on June 20, 2005
