What To Do In Manitou Springs , CO

Just minutes from Colorado Springs, Manitou Springs is a magical town located in El Paso County. This beautiful mountain community has a population of 5314 and is named for the Native American word meaning “great spirit.” The eight naturally carbonated mineral spring fountains located throughout the town are thought to have healing benefits.Manitou Springs remains a charming hippie-era haven filled with art galleries, funky boutiques and outdoor cafes. The Ute, Cheyenne and other Native Americans who were early settlers considered this area sacred for its healing springs and clean mountain air. Dr. Edwin James was the first Westerner to discover the magical waters.

Tales of the mineral springs and the mountain air inspired Dr. William A Bell and General William J Palmer to visit in 1868. They soon decided that the region would be a perfect resort area. Manitou Springs was founded in 1872, the same year thatColorado became a state.

In the 1970s a new sewage treatment plant caused most of the natural springs to become undrinkable. The revitalization and renovation of Manitou Springs began in the 1980s with the formation of the National Historic District. 1987 brought about the renewal of the springs with the creation of the Mineral Springs Foundation.By the 1990s the area was established as a health resort. The influx of guests caused some struggles for the community throughout the following years.
